Bee Products
Bee products like propolis, pollen and honey were found to exhibit diverse biological activities. The group is interested in determining their phenolic content and antioxidant activities in addition to the compounds that they possess.
Vibrational Spectroscopy
Vibrational spectroscopic methods such as IR and Raman are used to probe interactions of metals with phosphate containing materials. In addition, the vibrational spectroscopy of various antibiotics were determined using infrared and Raman techniques and compared with theoretical results obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These techniques are also used to develop methods to discriminate drugs/pharmaceuticals if they are new or way beyond expiration date.
Nanomaterials
Commercially available nanomaterials are utilized for removal of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and cobalt in aqueous samples. Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is chiefly used to monitor the removal of the heavy metals. In addition, the binding interaction of commercially available nanomaterials with proteins (BSA, HSA and hemoglobin) and lectins (phytohemagglutinin) are analyzed by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis absorbance, flurescence, CD and IR).
