Chemistry in the Community
Official webpage of Project CHEMUNITY started by Elmer-Rico E. Mojica of IC, UPLB. Project CHEMUNITY (Chemistry in the Community) is a pet project conceived by Elmer-Rico E. Mojica when he was a faculty at the Institute of Chemistry (IC), University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB). Although it was partially started in 2000, the project was officially launched in 2003 when he was the Extension Coordinator of IC. As an Assistant Professor in UPLB, he saw a need of a concrete program to extend help to other institutions. He wanted to have a program wherein faculty and staff of IC, UPLB shifted their efforts away from their "ivory tower" and bring them to grassroots, particularly in assisting citizens to develop communities that are conscious of science particularly chemistry. This project includes assistance in the form conducting tutorials for UPCAT, providing technical knowledge and expertise for students conducting their investigatory science research and thesis and helping teachers in upgrading their knowledge in the form of seminars and workshops. Since the program was launched, it has already catered several schools in Laguna, Cavite, Batangas and Zamboanga City. The aim of the project is to expand it and possibly make it a nationwide program. Since Dr. Mojica, who is now an Associate Professor at Pace University based in New York City, most of the activities had become online in the form of webinars. In the summer of 2018, Dr. Mojica was appointed as Visiting Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering in UPLB. During his visit in the Philippines he held seminar workshops at various institutions. At present, Dr. Mojica is willing to give webinars to any audience who are based not only in the Philippines but around the world. |
